- Short and long fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (oxide and non-oxide) including powder and polymer-derived materials synthesis, processing and heattreatment (e.g. solid-state synthesis, thermoplastic and thermoset polymer precursor processing, ceramic slurry casting, hot pressing, extrusion, prepreg technologies, sintering); interfacial reactions of high temperature ceramics and composites for resource efficient processing of metals; high temperature mechanical testing of fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites.
- Polymer-derived ceramics (coatings for germicidal as well as anti-corrosive applications, structural and functional fibers); high temperature mechanical testing and aging of oxide ceramic electrolytes and solid oxide electrolyzer cells; nonoxide ceramics with improved thermal conductivity and high stiffness for semiconductor manufacturing and packaging applications; microstructural, chemical and physical characterization (high temperature nano-indentation in SEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, DSC/DTA with mass spectroscopy).
- Additive manufacturing—Wood polymer derived ceramics (fused filament fabrication), fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (intuitive robot programming assisted short fiber spraying, fused filament fabrication of fiber composites), nonoxide ceramic matrix composites with direct ink writing.
- Industry transfer and development of energy efficient thermal processing methods with industry partners.
