Our research is focused on the development and characterization of biomaterials, including polymers, bioactive glasses and composites, for biomedical applications, specially medical implants, tissue engineering/regenerative medicine and drug delivery.

  • New biomaterials based on polymer / nanoparticle composites and bioactive glasses
e.g. 3D composite scaffolds with angiogenic potential for vascularized tissue engineering
  • Electric field assisted processing of biomedical nanomaterials
e.g. electrospinning technique for the development of nanofibers and fiber mats for cardiac tissue engineering (heart patches) and wound healing dressings, electrophoretic deposition for the development of bioactive and antibacterial polymer coatings on metallic implants
  • 3D bioprinting (biofabrication)
e.g. development of bioinks based on alginate, gelatine and other biopolymers for the fabrication of 3D tissue analogue structures by 3D bioprinting, electrically conductive polymers for tissue stimulation
  • Drug delivery systems
e.g. phytotherapeutic agents, nanoparticles and nanofibers for encapsulation of essential oils, antibacterial surfaces, mesoporous bioactive glasses
